Sky’s no limit: Our top cloud computing predictions for 2019

Cloud computing, even after more than a decade of existence, is still an evolving platform for enterprises and their applications. As companies modernize, more and more are shifting to the cloud for the extensive benefits it offers. Cloud adoption is becoming mainstream as most of the companies who are not yet reaping the cloud benefits will start migrating sooner or later. Also, the companies who use the cloud for only a fraction of the core business will start adopting various cloud tools and services for other reasons. But what’s ahead? That’s what we will try to let you know here, as we unveil our top cloud computing predictions for 2019.

Newer SaaS ecosystems

Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform are the market leaders when it comes to the provisioning of cloud computing solutions in PaaS and IaaS segments.

The SaaS industry is growing and supports various functionalities for users and companies. SaaS providers, in order to sustain their growth and development, have started investing in building better, stronger, and more sustainable ecosystems.

Starting this year, we can expect cloud companies that provide software-as-a-service to further increase their investments in applications such as resource planning, human resources, logistics, customer support, and other services. SaaS will support better, wider, and more powerful sets of applications and products.

Serverless cloud computing

Serverless computing is a form of utility computing, and it is one of the latest, cheapest, and easiest-to-manage ways of hosting applications. In serverless cloud computing, users do not have to manage the infrastructure on which the applications are hosted. The serverless platform executes the code written by the developer using only a very precise number of computing resources. Whenever an event is triggered by the end user, the serverless platform takes care of the request and executes the task.

Serverless computing was first brought into the limelight by Amazon’s AWS Lambda, and now other market leaders such as Microsoft and Google also have their serverless cloud computing platforms. With users now having several options to choose from, we can expect a sharp rise in the serverless computing starting this year. This serves an easy means for small companies and startups to continue operations without having to deal with the hassles of establishing infrastructure, establishing a market, security, and incurring maintenance-related costs.

Security challenges will remain

Security is the biggest challenge for every IT service, and cloud computing is no exception. Even in 2019, security will remain the biggest challenge for the cloud. As more and more companies are migrating to the cloud, usage will be increased accordingly. As more data, including the sensitive information being stored on the cloud, increases, the threat of data being corrupted or stolen will also increase.

With companies migrating to the cloud, all major operations and support will be accessed through the network from the cloud. Since a company cannot restrict the use of remote access and endpoints, protection of devices and the device connections with the cloud will remain of paramount importance even in 2019.

Specialized cloud services

Cloud computing offers various capabilities for companies by rendering the services in different models such as IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. Now there are specialized services, which focus on a particular application such as mobile technology, blockchain integration, and more. These offshoots of popular cloud computing services are available now, but we expect them to become mainstream this year:

Integrating-platform-as-a-service (iPaaS)

iPaaS is a specialized platform-as-a-service, which provides a set of automation tools and services to enable easy integration of applications, services, and data.

Data-platform-as-a-service (dPaaS)

As the name suggests, dPaaS is meant to provide a platform for companies that need to deploy huge data clusters and need a ready-to-use Big Data solution such as Hadoop.

Blockchain-as-a-service (BaaS)

The much-discussed distributed ledger technology now has its own service provider model, which provides blockchain services for various applications.

Function-as-a-service (FaaS)

FaaS is a category of cloud computing, that allows companies to develop, run, manage, and upgrade the functionalities of applications without having to deal with the complexities involved in building and maintaining the infrastructure needed to develop an app.

Mobile-backend-as-a-service (mBaaS)

Also known as backend-as-a-service, BaaS is a cloud model that provides companies an easy means of linking their mobile and web applications to the backend cloud storage.

Containerization

Containers are a specialized form of operating system virtualization that can be used to run any application ranging from a microservice to a larger application. A container has all the necessary executable files, binaries, libraries, and configuration files, and are ready to use. Containers play a vital role in the current day’s cloud implementations.

cloud computing predictions

Containers and Docker have taken the IT world by storm due to the advantages and portability they offer. We can expect a similar rise in containers, especially in the microservices segment. Microservices makes development easy and faster. In 2019, we can expect the mesh services, which supports these microservices apps and their interactions with other resources, to develop and tackle the current complexity challenge.

Cloud computing predictions: Just scratching the surface

There will be several other groundbreaking innovations or implementations of the cloud in the year 2019 — we just don’t know what they are yet. Considering the pace at which industry is adapting to the cloud, it is evident that cloud computing is changing so fast it will outstrip our cloud computing predictions, not only for 2019 but beyond.
