A Quick Tip To Alter Default Behaviour Of GlobalNameZones

GlobalNames Zone is a new feature in Windows Server 2008 DNS Server. This is a type of zone and must be created manually in the DNS Server snap-in. When you create this zone, the default behaviour of DNS Name resolution changes. The client will query the GlobalNames zone first before querying any other zone in the DNS Server. You can change this behaviour by modifying the following registry entry at DNS Server where you have created the GlobalNames zone:

  • KEY NAME: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters
  • Entry Name: GlobalNamesQueryOrder
  • Value: 0(Query GlobalNames zone first then other zones). This is the default behavior.
  • 1(Query other zones first, then GlobalNames zone).
