IBM Verse: a new way to collaborate

The GSX Blog

ibmverse resized 600The beginning of each year, Notes and other IBM products enthusiasts come to ConnectED (formerly Lotusphere) to discover the latest innovations dedicated to communication solutions in collaborative environments. With the tag line “a new way to engage”, IBM really wants to show it’s collaborative and analytical vision of how we work. IBM had the same idea in November 2014 when they announced IBM Verse, which is now one of the stars at ConnectED 2015.

What is IBM Verse?

IBM Verse is the new cloud based webmail solution. The ultimate goal of this product is to be social and analytical. Verse condenses information on it’s home page. Mail is on the left, important contacts are on the top and the agenda is on the bottom in a timeline form. According to Jeff Schick, IBM Verse is one of their biggest launches. “Through it’s analytical and collaborative capabilities, Verse will bring a new way to work and to reinforce collaborators’ commitment.”

Verse works in every HTML5 format browsers. The majority of the services provided (mails, chat, agenda, colleagues profiles) are hosted on Domino servers that come from Notes while meeting (and other) services are hosted by SoftLayer infrastructures.

A freemium version of IBM Verse will be available at the end of the first quarter. The mail client will be free for companies that use basic functions (mails, chat, meetings) even if these functions will be in a restricted volume mode. Kramer Reeves explains, “Companies that want to have analytical capabilities and have access to advanced collaborative functions should have the premium version.”

In fact, IBM uses an integrated tool in order to provide a special view that highlights in a smart way the most critical actions for the end-user during his day. The tool learns preferences and priorities of the end-user and instantly provides the context of the project with the differents teams and workers involved.

IBM will continue to update Notes but there is no doubt that Verse will quickly be a “must have” and not only a “nice to have”.
