Targeting policy for Vista computers

If you have a mix of XP and Vista computers in a department or location, you may have the computer accounts for these computers in the same organizational unit (OU). But if you have a Group Policy Object (GPO) linked to that OU that should only target the Vista computers, how can you configure the GPO to do this?

The solution is to use WMI filtering. Open Group Policy Management Console, right-click on the WMI Filters node, select New, and add the following WMI query string:

Select * from Win32_OperatingSystem where Caption like "%Vista%"

Once the WMI filter has been created, you can use the WMI Filtering control at the bottom of the Scope tab when any GPO is selected to apply the filter to that GPO.
