Troubleshooting – Sysprep and Capture task sequence fails with error

Problem: You are trying to use the Sysprep and Capture task sequence of Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2012 to sysprep a Windows 7 installation and then capture the sysprepped image as a WIM file,  but it fails with the following error:

Operating system did not complete successfully

the error details include the following in their description:

ZTI ERROR – Unhandled error returned by ZTIBackup: Subscript out of range (p)

Litetouch deployment failed, Return Code = -2147467259 0x80004005

In addition, the SMSTS.log file includes the following information:

Failed to run the action: Create WIM. The storage control block address is invalid. (Error: 00000009; Source: Windows)

Resolution: The problem is that while your CustomSettings.ini file contains SkipCapture =YES, it doesn’t contain any lines specifying BackupShare or BackupFile, so MDT doesn’t know where to save the captured WIM file.
