What kind of anti-spam updates are available for Exchange 2007?

There is a common misunderstanding about the different anti-spam updates that are available from Microsoft and how Forefront Security for Exchange is involved in the whole process.

Forefront Security for Exchange (FSE) is a pure anti-virus software. The anti-spam technology is built-in on the Exchange Server 2007, but when you install FSE, you are given the right to download the Enterprise updates, which occur much more frequently… It's all about the CAL! Here are the main differences:

Exchange 2007 Standard CAL (without FSE)
Anti-spam definition updates: Spam definition updates are delivered every two weeks. The updates must be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Web site to the Exchange 2007 server.

Exchange 2007 Enterprise CAL (With FSE)
Anti-spam definition updates:
Spam definition updates are delivered automatically by Microsoft Update to the Exchange 2007 server one time each day.
Spam signature updates: Spam signature updates are delivered automatically by Microsoft Update to the Exchange 2007 server several times each day.
IP reputation updates: IP reputation updates are delivered automatically by Microsoft Update to the Exchange 2007 server several times each day.

As you see, with FSE and the Enterprise CAL you stay much more secure. In order to configure the automatic updates, please read http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125199.aspx
