Windows 2000 Service Pack 3: Basics and Installation

Microsoft released the latest service pack for Windows 2000 that implements changes to the operating system required in the company’s settlement of its antitrust case. Service pack 3 includes a component called Set Program Access and Defaults, which lets end-users to control Microsoft’s software like Internet Browsers and Email Clients. This component is enforced via the consent degree signed by Microsoft, the Department of Justice and nine states that agreed to settle the long-running anti-trust case. This article chronicles the fundamentals you need to know to install it, where to get it from and the changes it makes.

Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 Download

Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) provides the latest updates to the Windows 2000 family of operating systems. You can get the service pack either from Windows Update or here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp3/default.asp

Service pack 3 is a 125 MB download.

Installation Fundamentals

<> To Install Service Pack 3, you can either go to Windows Update, or you can go the link posted above in this article.
<> To start the install, you can run the executable, or it will launch from Windows Update.
<> The first screen you will see will be to begin the Service Pack 3 install as seen here.

<> It is highly recommended you update your ERD (Repair Disk) before installation. You can run this by going to the Run dialog box and running NTBACKUP. The splash screen has an option to run and make an ERD.

<> Next, you will have to agree to the license agreement. Continue on by selecting that you agree.

<> If you have the space, select to archive your files. In today’s computer systems, you really should have enough space (or you can make some space) to archive your system before doing the install. This install takes a long time to finish (I have seen systems take as long as 3 hours) and you will want to take every precaution you can.

<> Click next and move to the next screen.

<> You will have your computer inspected for installation. This has sometimes taken up to 20 minutes so be patient. When I first installed it to test, I thought the Service Pack was hung up and it wasn’t so give it a little time to work.

<> Next, you system will also check for the necessary space it needs (as mentioned above) to do the install. Again, you should have this amount of space on your system and if you don’t, you will need to make it up by cleaning out temp files, or old data.

<> Windows Service Pack 3 if downloaded may take awhile depending on your systems network / Internet connection and bandwidth.

<> Once you finish the install, reboot your system and it will then be configured with Service Pack 3.

Service Pack 3 New Updates

Now that you have the Service Pack install, what is the major difference? Well, most times, when you install a Service Pack, you never really see the changes it makes. You know that performance is most often better, but many times, physical Operating System changes are not seen.

In Service Pack 3, that is not the case, Due to the Anti-Trust settlement, Microsoft had to make a way for you to uninstall Internet Explorer or choose between what it is you want to use on your system. Well, for any of you that ever tried to uninstall Internet Explorer… you can’t. It will kill your system if you try. Here, you can obviously see that the service pack has made the changes to your system to allow you to remove Internet Explorer in favor of Opera or Netscape Navigator if you like those better. The point is, now you have a choice.

That also holds true for Outlook Express as you can see here. It is now possible to remove Outlook Express as well.

Lastly, If you notice – when you go the Start => Settings => Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs, there is a new set of configurations you can set (as seen below), but selecting the Set Program Access and Defaults icon. Now, you can set the following:

<> Default Browser
<> Default Email Program
<> Default Media Player
<> Default Instant Messaging Program
<> Default Virtual Machine

All in all, this is the major change found within the Service Pack. Here is a list of the other fixes you will also fix when installing Service Pack 3.
