Amazon Detective now generally available to protect AWS resources

Amazon Web Services recently announced the general availability of a new service called Amazon Detective. Now available in 14 commercial regions, this offering provides functionality that is designed to simplify the process of analyzing, investigating, and identifying the root causes of potential security issues or suspicious activities.

If you’re looking for a new way to protect your AWS resources or want to learn more about this service, read on for a guide.

About this new AWS new service

Amazon Detective works by automatically collecting log data from across your AWS resources. It then uses advanced technology like machine learning, statistical analysis, and graph theory to create visualizations that allow you to quickly analyze and act on potential security issues.

More specifically, Amazon Detective can analyze trillions of events from a variety of data sources, including Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) Flow Logs, AWS CloudTrail, and Amazon GuardDuty. Then it can automatically create an interactive view of all those resources and users, including all of their interactions over time. Since you can view all of those interactions from various resources in one place, it gives you an easy way to pinpoint underlying reasons for security issues. Since the visualizations are interactive, you can also drill down into relevant historical activities so you can quickly determine the root cause of each issue.

Benefits of Amazon Detective

The first benefit of Amazon Detective is that it gives organizations and IT the ability to act on potential issues quickly. Since all the data is available in one unified view, you no longer have to comb through various resources to find potential threats. Additionally, the service automatically processes terabytes of event data records and then organizes it into views that you can analyze and interact with in whatever way makes the most sense for your operations. This allows you to customize the experience and efficiently address issues that you may not have otherwise been able to access or identify.
