Amazon Macie: New enhanced version with lower pricing available

Amazon Macie, a machine learning security service from Amazon Web Services, has been available since August 2017. Now, after several years of feedback from users, AWS has released an enhanced version with several new features and what Amazon calls a “simplified pricing plan” that will save users money.

Amazon Macie is aimed at helping users identify and protect their most sensitive data. The automated service delivers an inventory of your Amazon S3 buckets, using machine learning and pattern matching to alert you if there are potential security problems. Amazon Macie’s results can be easily searched in the AWS Management Console, where you can filter them to see just the details you want. The service is especially useful for industries where compliance is a must, for example, organizations subject to rules and regulations such as the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the EU’s General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR).

Here are some of the new features in the enhanced Amazon Macie, according to AWS:

  • Expanded sensitive data discovery, including updated machine learning models for personally identifiable information detection, and customer-defined sensitive data types.
  • Multi-account support with AWS Organizations.
  • API coverage for programmatic use of Amazon Macie with AWS SDKs and AWS command-line interface (CLI).
  • Simplified free tier and free trial to help you understand your costs.
  • Redesigned console and user experience.

As for costs, AWS says you will now be charged based on the number of S3 buckets that Amazon Macie evaluates and the amount of data for “sensitive data discovery jobs.” AWS says the tiered pricing plan introduced in this new version reduces the price by 80 percent. If you use higher volumes, your costs can be lowered by more than 90 percent.

AWS says Macie is “now tightly integrated with S3 in the backend.” This means you no longer have to enable S3 data events using AWS CloudTrail, which could save you even more money.
