Personally, I believe that you cannot find the middle ground between the two - either you enforce security throughout and compromise Privacy or the other way round! The UK government is proposing a new law that allows its security services to monitor Internet traffic leaving and entering the country on all or specific users without the need of a warrant. And this - 'communications data' is what the security services require to fight cyber criminals, however, how the authorities will guarantee that this is done without breaching privacy of civilized users on the Internet? Some are saying that this is comparable to the surveillance mechanisms put in China and Iran, while, it will introduce additional costs to Internet operators during tough economic times.
