Disabling Autoplay on Vista

Autoplay enables Vista to automatically open and run different types of media when they are inserted into the computer. In some environments this may not be desirable, for example it is possible for some malware to use autorun.inf to try and install themselves on computers. If you’re worried about this, you can disable Autoplay on Vista as follows:

  1. Open Default Programs from Control Panel.
  2. Click Change Autoplay Settings.
  3. Clear the checkbox that says “Use Autoplay for all media and devices” and click Save.
