Exchange Server and Outlook Standards and Protocol Documentation – October 2012

Microsoft released updated versions of 2 technical documents: one regarding proprietary protocols used by Exchange Server, other regarding the industry standards that Exchange and Outlook support:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server Protocol Documentation: The Microsoft Exchange protocol documentation provides detailed technical specifications for the Microsoft protocols and extensions to industry-standard and other published protocols that are implemented and used by Microsoft Exchange.
The documentation is designed to describe each protocol in detail as it is used by Microsoft Exchange. Each specification documents technical requirements, limitations, dependencies, and specific protocol behavior.
The documentation includes companion overview and reference documents that supplement the technical specifications with conceptual background information, overviews of inter-protocol relationships and interactions, and technical reference information.
  • Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Outlook Standards Documentation: The Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Outlook standards documentation describes how Exchange and Outlook support industry messaging standards and RFC documents about iCalendar, IMAP4, and POP3.
The documentation includes companion overview and reference documents that supplement the technical specifications with background information, terminology, and technical reference information.
