Fixing Accidental Enabling of 802.1X for a Network

Are you trying to connect to a network in Windows XP and keep receiving the following message?

“Click here to select a certificate or other credentials for connection to the network”

Well this means 802.1X, an authentication and security feature, is enabled for the network profile. If you don’t know what this is or haven’t been told to configure 802.1X or PEAP for the network, you might have just accidentally enabled it when going through the settings. You can however, easily disable this feature in so you can connect to your network:

  1. Double-click the wireless icon in the system tray.
  2. Click the Change the order of preferred networks link on the left.
  3. On the Wireless Networks tab, double-click the profile entry.
  4. On the profile properties dialog, select the Authentication tab.
  5. Uncheck the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network option and click OK.
  6. Now try to connect to the network again.

This same situation is possible in Windows Vista, however, it’s a bit smarter; on the Connect to a Network window it will tell you that your settings don’t match those of the network.
