IBM Internet Security Systems Extends Industry-Leading Preemptive Protection to Remote Segments of the Network

ARMONK, NY – 02 Apr 2007: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced it will extend its Internet Security Systems (ISS) intrusion prevention technology to remote segments of the network by adding a new, lower-cost product to the IBM Proventia® Network Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) family. Through the addition of Proventia Network IPS GX3002, IBM will offer comprehensive, ahead-of-the-threat protection for a new layer of the enterprise network. The GX3002 is designed to protect a single network segment at up to 10 megabits per second (Mbps) of throughput, and its desktop form factor features integrated zero-power bypass functionality to help ensure high network availability.

“IBM ISS understands that scalability is a key ingredient for offering customers a comprehensive set of options for their enterprise security needs,” said Rob Ayoub, Industry Manager, Network Security with Frost & Sullivan. “The addition of a lower-cost intrusion prevention appliance to the company’s product line extends its powerful, preemptive protection capabilities to a broader set of companies, and enables larger companies to cost-effectively shield additional segments of the network from attack.”

Proventia Network IPS GX3002 brings IBM’s IPS protection to remote segments of the network such as small branch offices and critical end points, including ATMs, points-of-sale and self-help kiosks, which are increasingly becoming popular targets for Internet attacks. Until now, companies needing to protect these points have only had limited-feature IPS offerings available to them. This product provides the same robust security features found in other Proventia Network IPS products, while still meeting the lower cost requirements for remote segments.

“Long gone are the days when a firewall and antivirus solution were enough to protect a corporate network,” said Greg Adams, Business Line Executive, Network Solutions for IBM Internet Security Systems. “In today’s rapid-paced business environment, new applications, employees and partners are continually gaining access to every part of the network. Unfortunately, online attackers are also benefiting from this more fluid, open access, making it necessary for companies to implement strong security solutions from network to perimeter and at every vulnerable point in between.”

Unlike competitive IPS offerings, IBM Proventia products are part of a unified security platform. The entire IBM Internet Security Systems product line integrates through a centralized management console, IBM Proventia Management SiteProtector™, designed to maximize protection and simplify management. Customers can also choose to have Proventia Network IPS managed for them through IBM Managed Security Services.

Through its Proventia protection platform, IBM ISS provides multi-layered protection for enterprises from network to host. By infusing its products with security intelligence from the IBM X-Force® research and development team and its unique IBM Virtual Patch® technology, IBM’s solution is designed to protect customers before their business assets are impacted by online intrusions.
