Intel announces new tech, including laptop innovation Project Athena

Intel recently made a series of announcements regarding new products and tech innovations at CES 2019. Company reps discussed everything from PCs and new devices to expanding technology like artificial intelligence and autonomous driving to the company’s new laptop innovation initiative, Project Athena. Here’s a rundown of some of the company’s main talking points from the event, specifically those that could be relevant to IT professionals and enterprise users.

Project Athena and PC innovations

One of the main innovations that Intel is currently working on is its first volume 10nm PC processor, known as Ice Lake. Set to be released by the end of 2019, Ice Lake integrates with Intel’s new Sunny Cove microarchitecture and offers improved graphics and AI functionality.

Intel also announced a new set of industry specifications known as Project Athena. This initiative is meant to usher in a new class of advanced laptops that can take advantage of new technologies like 5G and AI. In addition, the company discussed a new client platform called Lakefield and an expansion of its 9th Gen Intel Core desktop family of products.

Evolving technology

In addition to its product updates and Project Athena, Intel reps also discussed some cloud and network innovations that could impact a wide array of products. For example, the company announced its new Nervana Neural Network Processor for Inference, or NNP-I, which is slated for production later this year. It’s a chip that is meant to accelerate inference for companies with high workload demands.

They also unveiled a preview of the company’s 10nm server processor and announced expanded 5G infrastructure with 10nm SoCs. And they announced the start of shipping for its next-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors.
