Managing a Server Core file server

You can use the Share And Storage Management snap-in from a remote computer to provision storage and shares on a Server Core machine. The remote computer can be a Windows Server 2008 server with the File Services role installed, or it can be a computer running Windows Vista SP1+ or Windows Server 2008 with the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) installed. Before you can use the Share and Storage Management snap-in to do this, you must perform the following steps on your Server Core machine:

Enable the Remote Administration rule group by typing netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=“Remote Administration” new enable=yes from the command prompt.

Enable the File and Printer Sharing rule group by typing netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=“File and Printer Sharing” new enable=yes from the command prompt.

Enable the Remote Volume Management rule group by typing netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=“Remote Volume Management” new enable=yes from the command prompt.

You must also enable the Remote Volume Management firewall rule group on the computer on your remote management computer.
