Memory metrics in vCenter

There are a couple of places to view memory metrics on a VM level from the vCenter client. Unfortunately, there seems to be some confusion around the terminology and definitions used to describe the memory metrics. Fortunately, Duncan Epping has put together a nice article detailing these memory metrics and delving a little deeper into their meaning. For example, the vCenter client shows numbers for:

  • Memory
  • Memory Overhead
  • Consumed Host Memory
  • Active guest memory
  • Guest memory:
    • Private
    • Shared
    • Swapped
    • Compressed
    • Ballooned
    • Unaccessed
    • Active
