Microsoft simplifies Defender ATP deployment for macOS

Good news for organizations that allow their Mac-owning employees to use their own devices as they work from home during the coronavirus pandemic. Microsoft has simplified the deployment of its Microsoft Defender ATP for macOS.

Using Microsoft Endpoint Manager, IT admins can deploy, manage, and secure work data on all their endpoints from a single platform. Microsoft has positioned its Defender Advanced Threat Protection as a solution to help businesses “prevent, detect, investigate, and respond to advanced threats using next-generation protection and endpoint detection.”

Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection for macOS is now available as an app type within Microsoft Endpoint Manager, where IT admins can configure the most-used settings quickly and easily. Settings and configurations are now visible directly from the Endpoint Manager console. Before this update, admins would manually have to set and upload key-value pairs in a preference file or edit *.plist files. So, as you can see, the new way will be a real timesaver.

To add Microsoft Defender ATP, sign in to the Microsoft Endpoint Manager admin center and select the app type as macOS under the Microsoft Defender ATP field. For a more in-depth discussion of how to configure Microsoft Defender ATP for Mac in Microsoft Intune, click here.

The neat thing about unified endpoint security management in Microsoft Endpoint Manager for macOS is that all your configurations can now be done from a single pane of glass, just as it can currently be done with Windows. Microsoft says this will “save time and energy for the busy IT admin,” especially those coping with “bring your own device” issues forced by new work from home policies.

For those who want to keep using the manual deployment method of Microsoft Defender ATP for macOS, Microsoft says it will still be supported.
