How to fix the ‘No Internet, secured’ connection error

Have you ever been in a situation where your computer is connected to the Internet, but you can’t open any page on the web? Well, it’s a strange but often solvable issue. When you’re connected to the Internet through a WiFi router but can’t get to any web page, check your wireless icon in the bottom right-hand side tray. You’ll most likely see a small yellow triangle, and when you click on it, you’ll see a “no Internet, secured” message.

This error occurs due to different reasons, the most common being a change in your configuration settings like your IP address, which could cause your router to have problems connecting to the Internet. Any program, including an update to the operating system, can cause this problem.

How to fix the ‘no Internet, secured’ problem

There are many ways to fix this problem. It’s a good idea to run through each of the below options, as any of it can fix the problem. It’s just that you don’t know which one will work for every occurrence of this error!

Since it is hard to pin down the exact cause of this error, you’ll have to try one or more of these solutions.

Change the property of your WiFi connection

Follow the steps below to change the properties of your connection.

  • Hold the Windows key and press the letter “R.” In the run window, enter “ncpa.cpl” and click OK.
  • This will open the “network connections” window.
  • Choose your WiFi connection, right-click on the WiFi and choose “properties.”

No internet, secured

  • In this dialog box, ensure that the following options are checked.
  1. Client for Microsoft networks
  2. File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks
  3. Link-layer topology discovery mapper I/O driver
  4. Internet protocol version 4, or TCP/IPv4
  5. Internet protocol version 6, or TCP/IPv6
  6. Link-layer topology discovery responder
  • Next, click on the network icon and locate the WiFi network that’s giving this error
  • Unplug any Ethernet cable connected to your computer
  • Enable airplane mode on your computer
  • Restart the WiFi router
  • After the WiFi router is up, disable the airplane mode on your computer
  • Next, connect to the Wi-Fi connection again and it should work

Update the network adapter

Sometimes, an outdated driver can prevent your computer from connecting to the Internet. To fix:

  • Press the Windows key + R and type “devmgmt.msc” in the Run dialog box. Press enter and this will open the device manager window
  • In this window, double-click on “network adapters” to expand it
  • Identify the network adapter that your computer is currently using, right-click on it and choose “update driver software”

No internet, secured

  • In the “update driver” dialog box, click on “search automatically” option. Windows will search for the updated driver software
  • Next, open “network and sharing center.” To open, right-click on the network icon in your computer’s notification area and choose “open network and sharing center”
  • Look for “change adapter settings” in the left-hand menu and click on it
  • Next, right-click on your wireless network and choose “properties”
  • Uncheck the Internet protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6) to disable it. Click OK

No internet, secured

  • Close the window and restart your computer. Now, you should be able to access the Internet

If you’re not able to access the Internet still, try uninstalling your network adapter. To do that:

  • Open the device manager and double-click on network adapters to expand it
  • Locate the network adapter you’re using for Internet connection, right-click on it, and choose “uninstall.” This will uninstall the network adapter from your computer
  • Next, look for a menu item called “action.” right at the top of the pane. Click and choose “Scan for hardware changes.” Windows will automatically scan and detect the network adapter and will even install it for you
  • Wait for the installation and then, restart your computer

This should fix any network adapter-related problems.

Modify the TCP/IP properties

If you’re unable to connect to your Internet, and if you’re using Windows 10 creators’ update or Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, try changing the TCP/IP settings.

  • Hold the Windows key and press the letter “R.” In the run window, enter “ncpa.cpl” and click OK
  • This will open the “network connections” window
  • Identify your WiFi connection, right-click on it and choose “properties”
  • Double-click the Internet protocol 4 or TCP/IPv4
  • Choose “obtain an IP address automatically” and “obtain DNS server automatically” options
  • Next, click the “advanced” button. You can find it on the right-hand bottom of the dialog box
  • Go to a tab called “WINS”
  • Scroll down to NetBIOS setting and choose “enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP” setting. Click OK on all the dialog boxes.

No internet, secured

Close out of everything. Wait a few minutes and open the network adapter again. This time, the IPv4 connectivity should be in “Internet” state, and this should open any web page for you.

Change power management properties

Another possible cause of the “no Internet, secured” error could be due to power management settings. You’ll most likely face this problem if you’re using Windows 10 creators update or Windows 10 Fall Creators Update versions. To work around this problem:

  • Press the Windows key + X to get to the jump list
  • Select device manager and expand network adapters
  • Double-click your wireless network and go to “power management” tab
  • Uncheck the “allow computer to turn off this device to save power” option
  • Restart your computer and check if you can connect to the Internet now.

Disable WiFi sharing software

In Windows 10, the router driver can have a conflict with the wireless driver and this can throw up “no internet, secured” error. To fix this conflict,

  • Open network adapters. Right-click on the wireless network you’re using and choose “properties”
  • Click on “sharing” tab
  • Uncheck “Microsoft network adapter multiplexor protocol” and any other item related to WiFi sharing. To know which items are related to sharing, click on each item and below, you’ll get a description of its purpose. Based on this description, choose the items you have to uncheck
  • Close out of network adapters and try connecting to the Internet

Yes, the “no Internet, secured” error is a common error. You’ll most likely get it in Windows 10 than in other versions. Since many changes in configuration settings can cause this error, you’ll have to run through different options to get a fix. In our experience, one of the above solutions should fix this problem for you.

    1. THE FIX – using a succession of solutions here & elsewhere, I have found that a combo of fixes works for the LAPTOP with WIN 10 ‘No Internet, Secured’ problem. As short as possible, here is the list to get it DONE every time: 1) First make note of your password you need for the offending router/access – you will need it again later. 2)Restart the Network LIST 3)Uninstall the Network Adaptor, then choose Action and search for hardware changes to reinstall the adaptor 4)Right click Network Adaptor for properties and click Power Management to uncheck all boxes there 5) Command Prompt right click run as admin, and type IPCONFIG /flushdns and hit return 6) Go to WIFI connection and click on offending connection, choose Airplane mode, then restart WIFI and disable Airplane mode 7) Click on connection that was the problem and connect – you must re-input password and connect. I use these Seven steps and I get connected every time now. Hoping it works for you 🙂

    2. For me, it was the 5 GHz radio channel that was the culprit. My Intel AC 3160 card didn’t like any 5 GHz channels above 48. When I set it to 48 or below, everything connected up ok. The other option is to set your card to use only 2.4GHz if your router is dual band and this was what I was doing until I discovered the radio channel fix. (I did this using the “Intel connection settings/Band selection/2.4 GHz band” from WiFi Status/Wireless Properties but you need a later driver version for this to be available.)

      1. Steve, thanks for your reply. I had this issue on a Thinkpad Carbon X1, Gen 4 with an Intel Dual Band AC 8620 wireless card. I fixed it on the router side. I enabled a guest network that broadcasts at a lower channel which “solved” the problem.

  1. All above steps tried but no luck we are continuously face issues. We are running windows 10 Enterprise version 1703

  2. So glad I came across this. I only had to follow the first two options and I finally got the network connection to work. Thank you!

    1. Awesome fix! Thanks!
      It works for my Win 10 PC every single TIME….. …. … every 5 minutes…. …
Oh! Working again…. for 5 minutes. Thanks again!

    2. Thank you very much. I fixed the problem using a simple method. Control panel>network and internet>network connections>right click on the name of wifi which you use>diagnose

    1. My computer just says “No internet, Secured” on phone hotspot at first and not on routers but after trying this my computer doesn’t even connect to my router now. Just great -_-

  3. I think I need a ton of help, because I’m easily confused. I’ve had this issue since that windows update that was messed up. Crashed my previous hard drive. I’ve had lots of issues with this Dell. And it’s had a rough time. Got a replacement. And can’t do certain downloads because it says I’m not online, but I can navigate to facebook and other websites. I don’t think I can even update drivers.

Example – can’t download Sims 4’s client, says I’m offline.
Example – could eventually download my Adobe but only after I click the option to continue offline.

Have tried to get support from Microsoft, had to find alternative ways just to speak to them, because of this issue. They couldn’t help me.

  4. Hello. I’ve tried following practically all the instructions written here and it seems like the same problem persists. 🙁 The main problem with my connection is that it will go back and forth between that “No Internet, Secured” status to regular “Connected, Secured” status, meaning sometimes it will load the pages and sometimes it won’t. What’s even worse is that my phone and tablet can access the internet just fine, yet when I use the internet on my laptop, it will jump between being able to or not…It’s very frustrating. :/ Is there any clear solution for this?

  5. Same problem here. Phone and Mac ok. Dell (Windows 10) no access. But can access using unsecured internet at public library. I have done all the steps above. We hv 3 Dell laptops with Windows 10. All not working. Call the internet provider. They said its not their problem. Called Dell, they want me to purchase service in order to advice me on what to do.
    I need help. Desperately.

  6. I have had all of the same problems as described here since the latest update. I can no longer receive updates. No solution works, not even the ones included here, which looked promising as they had a few different solutions.

Even connecting my laptop to the ethernet registers as no internet, secured.

      I found one workaround:

In Device Manager, under network adapters, double click on your wifi adapter. For me, it is Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168

Click Advanced at the top, and scroll down to Preferred Band.

Select Prefer 2.4GHz band and press okay.

Of course, now I am stuck with 2.4ghz speeds, but I am able to connect. Now need to see if something is not configured properly, or if after all this hair pulling if ultimately my network card is dying.

      1. This finally got my system working. After several weeks of trying all kinds for things this is the only one that allowed me to make any progress. My issue was exclusive to my wifi connection. I even stood up another wifi network but could not get past this issue until locking the wifi adapter down to 2.4GHz.

      2. Wow, thanks for the help. Tried many different things, re-installed the network driver and tried to reassign IPs in cmd. Tried to manually select the 2.4GHz. and it worked! thanks!

  7. Michael Townsend

I tried all of this and nothing worked. I remembered something from the past with antivirus software. I have webroot It is a good product. However qliches happen. I uninstalled webroot, updated windows ten, then reinstalled webroot.

  8. This bug is unsolvable. Windows doesn’t acknowledge it and won’t do anything to fix it.
Reinstall win7 if you can. Everything works fine there.

  9. 1. Print this web solution to .pdf on your desktop for safe keeping. Very helpful, thank you!
I have Windows 10 Home 1803 (May 2018) on my Lenovo Ideapad. I would connect to internet (Comcast), but within a few clicks in Chrome browser, the connection would drop, my web pages would freeze, or immediately take me to the ‘connection is broken’ screen and the system would start “fixing” the issue. Get back on the internet, drops again, fixes again…REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT.
I followed the steps in this article through the Power Management section and voila! I am typing this on a web page that is not being constantly dropped and re-connected.
This was the third set of internet-repair advice columns I tried following. I was literally about to go out and buy a new laptop and start over (this one is pushing 9 yrs).

  10. I tried several of the above, none worked.

    then I went to
Start – Right click – power options – additional power settings – change plan settings – change advanced power settings
    1. Wireless Adapter Setting – Power saving mode – set to Max performance
    2. USB Settings – USB selective suspend setting – set to disabled

    OK to save.

And ever since that 3-month old recurring problem had disappeared.

Try that, maybe both need not be changed, only one will suffice. If you find out which one, please post here.

  11. Thanks a lot, the section “Modify the TCP/IP properties” solved my issue. I used to be unable to access the Internet (althought still being able to connect to my Wi-Fi without Internet access) after uninstalling a VPN I used to have.

  12. Thanks so much!
I have windows 10 on my lenovo laptop. Connection was not an issue until recently. Started with connecting and disconnecting until it finally went to the connected, no internet message. Thank goodness I have my work laptop with me. I was able t fine this webpage, I tried many of the suggested steps, “Change power management properties” finally did the trick for me.

    1. Nope. No Joy.
Tried all the above, including other users’ suggestions. iPhone working fine, tablet still showing ‘No Internet, secured. No connection.

  13. Thank you for making this available. I have tried all except change TCP. But not fixed. I too have my Win10 laptop sometimes saying no internet and sometimes connected but no Webpage loads. I’ve upgraded everything on my BT wifi and all other devices work that are not Win10. I previously suspected BT but now that that is upgraded and Working well and i see every other poster’s problems I am going back to being suspicious of win10. I have had my other win10 laptop in the IT engineers shop for two months to fix this problem and he didn’t find anything because it seemed to work fine on his network. I am stuck because everything in my home office including printer relies on wifi.

  14. wifihotspothelp

    Hello all,
I am an xfinity pro performance customer and have been using the xfinitywifi hotspot for the past years at a location away from my residence.
However, for the last 15 days, I have been unable to connect to the xfinity hotspots with any of my devices. Trying to connect to xfinitywifi shows an orange triangle with “no internet connection”.
My service allows me to register up to 20 devices for the hotspot connectivity. We have less than 10 devices connected.
    So far,
    1. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the xfinitywifi app
    2. Removing all devices from the account and registering them again
    3. The location I am at, has several hotspots – however for some reason, the devices keep showing no internet connectivity.
Please help! I have spent 5+ hours with Comcast, and have had no success as yet.
    Thanks,
    Pen

  15. I’m trying to get a mini little laptop 11.6 just FYI. But so far everyone I have ordered (So far two different brands) will not connect to my open wifi connection. ALL my other computers and tech stuff will just fine with no problems at all. Is it my wifi or the laptop’s I keep getting (Tried Leveno and Asus) I just really need to know so I can figure out how to fix it for the next one.

  16. I had this problem after I changed my broadband provider. My phone could connect but my laptop came up with “no internet, secured”. Turns out it was a DNS problem that wasnt allowing the internet connection, rather than a Windows issue.

To get around this I had to access the admin of my router, change the DNS settings to manual, and use the following DNS settings

    8-8-8-8
    8-8-4-4

This sorted out the problem. Hope this helps.

  17. I found this to be incredibly helpful when all other computers in the house were connecting to the network except mine – yet it had been connecting just fine a few hours before. I found the instructions to be very clear (even for someone not technically minded). After completing the second set – I was back online. Thanks very much.

  18. My problem did not get resolved with any of the methods mentioned above. Actually, I used to get connected over the internet on my Windows Vista Laptop using two different Lenevo mobile phones using tethering/hotspot. There was no challenge at all. However, when I clean installed the Windows 10 over Windows Vista on my laptop (with all latest updates), one of the phone Lenovo K5 Note gets connected without any hassle automatically. Internet is accessible using that phone. However, using Lenovo Vibe K5 shows “No Internet, Secured” on my laptop. I tried all methods mentioned but nothing worked. When I tried through Windows, it sometimes shows the error of “missing default gateway”. It resolves and the internet gets connected for around 10 seconds and again the same issue. Please help!

  19. Lavanya:

My problem was trying to get T-Mobile’s Hotspot function from my Wife’s Samsung cell phone and Samsung tablet to connect to her laptop running Win 10. Thank you so much for posting this solution. I tried the very first option you gave and it fixed everything immediately. No more error at all.
My Wife is happy now and so am I.

  20. Hi,
I had the same problem on Windows 8.1. Formatted my Laptop and loaded Windows 10 but having the same error “No internet, secured”. Tried all the above but unable to solve the issue. This is very frustrating. Please help!!

  21. This was very helpful, thanks! Had been struggling with this for a few days now, but the uninstalling and reinstalling of the network adapter did the job for me!

  22. Turn off Windows updates! That’s why the damn thing keeps recurring. Yesterday, I was using a secondary laptop to access the internet to find information about how to solve the “no internet secured error”on my normal laptop. I never succeeded but today the secondary laptop had the same problem. I could tell that there had an update yesterday.

You need to look up instructions to stop updates on Windows 10; it’s more complicated that in earlier versions. If you find the secured error returning, first check whether there had been a sneaky update.

Yes, of course, your computer is now exposed to other problems without security updates. But, as you know, it will probably take a long time before Microsoft acknowledges the problem never mind fixes it.

    1. Thank you. Updating the adapter technique worked. It’s my new Dell laptop and I have just modified it from HDD to SSD.
      You saved my day!

  23. Trying to resolve this issue on an Asus machine. Appeared after updating from Win8.1 to 10.

Have spent hours trying to resolve this with all the great solutions listed here, but still no luck.

  24. Hello.. My laptop WiFi show the error of Yellowstone .. i check IP address network properties even it can not solve my internet problem.. how can i fix it plzz guide

  25. I tried a few of the options but they didn’t work, but then I tried this and it did!
Click the wifi icon in taskbar then “Network & Internet Settings”. In my version of Windows 10 there is the option at the bottom called “Network reset”. I reset, restarted and now it works! 🙂

  26. All the above instructions are for PCs, but what about for tablets ? I have this No internet, secured connection error on my Samsung Galaxy tab SM-T550 (though it works on my smartphone) and I don’t know what to do…

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out!

  27. I had this problem whith both the ethernet cable and wifi: No Internet Secured. Sometimes I did have the connection and other times not. The best solution for me was this:
I had had up to 8 devices connected to my router and that seemed to cause the problem with some Windows ones. The Linux and Android always worked ok. So I disconnected all my devices from the router (all wifi or cable off), restarted the router and then reconnected again one at the time. First the Windows ones that were the most often showing No Internet. So far it has worked for me. It looks like the router was struggling with too many connections. The model of my router is Asus 4G-N12

  28. I have tried all these remedies, but they only work temporarily … until it happens again. Reconnecting is simple and reliable for me: Go to the WiFi icon in the system tray; Go to your WiFi network; Click [Disconnect]; Click [X] Connect automatically.

There is a permanent solution to all the problems that Windows 10 has, and that Microsoft doesn’t acknowledge or give a $#!+ about. Since they aren’t supporting Windows 10 and have abandoned us users, we should simply abandon Microsoft and Windows 10. Voila! All Windows 10 problems solved!!!

Let’s see if Microsoft gives a $#!+ when their revenue stream starts drying up! 😉

  29. Thank you for this! Helped me out and fixed the problem. Tried to call Microsoft for help, was placed on hold forever and then it would hang up on me! Lifesaver!

    1. Simple way of solving problem when win 10 says no internet but you can connect fine is to go to Registry Editor,
      go to:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet
      and modify: EnableActiveProbing
then change “Value data” from “0” to “1”
      Then restart your computer.

Worked for me. No problem since.

  30. Thank you very much Lavanya. Problem solved in a few minutes.
Wi-Fi configuration (first steps); but how did it happen?
    Anyway, thanks you very much
    RB

  31. thank you so much. I tried dgoing to settings to troubleshoot the problem but it didn’t work. but now it does. THANK YOU!

  32. This happens quite a bit for me, seems my router likes to connect but not offer a DNS address which is what the computer uses to translate names to numeric addresses.
The enclosed link suggests modifying the dns directly, and that worked immediately for me, but maybe I just needed to be patient for win 10 to heal itself.
Open a powershell prompt and try :
    >netsh interface ipv4 set dns name=”Wi-Fi” static 8.8.8.8

8.8.8.8 is a “standard” dns address out on the web. There are others like 1.1.1.1 .

    https://helpdeskgeek.com/networking/change-ip-address-and-dns-servers-using-the-command-prompt/

  33. I too have had this issue for months and none of the above suggestions worked.

What did work is that I turned off the Windows Hyper-V feature and upon restart the Ethernet connection was listed as Internet Access. Reason I tried this is that the Virtual Ethernet installed with the feature was listed as the default.

This may be a bug that MS need to address.

    Cheers, Steve

    1. Further to above, on a laptop I did not have the Hyper-V feature installed, however, I did have Virtualisation enabled in the Bios, upon disabling in Bios I no longer had Windows thinking I had No Internet connection.

I had removed Virtualisation from Bios in my desktop and had mistakenly assumed that it was removing the Hyper-V feature that resolved the issue.

It is the Disabling of Virtualisation in machine Bios that in fact resolves this issue.

      Cheers, Steve

  34. Saying update drivers is all well and good, but how can this be done when the computer won’t connect to the internet?

My 5g is working perfectly but nothing at all will connect to the 2g version

  35. Sir,
Uncheck the “allow computer to turn off this device to save power” option
Restart your computer and check if you can connect to the Internet now.

The above suggestion worked fine for me. Thank You a lot.

  36. Othman A. Rahman

After all of the above descriptions, the most important things is to switch off your modem immediately after all steps. It will work properly when you open it.
Done well with me and internet work well.
    Best Regards..,

  37. I had to do this:
    1. Search for cmd and click on Run as administrator to start Command Prompt.
    2. Enter the following lines:
    o netsh winsock reset
    o netsh int ip reset
    3. Close Command Prompt and restart your PC.

  38. I have the same problem with the “no Internet, secured” and follow these steps until “property” and it wok on my Surface laptop.

    thanks

  39. I was ready to break my Surface pro 3 in half after I installed a windows update and then couldn’t connect load any websites! “enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP” fixed the problem. Thank you so much!!!!

  40. My fix has permanently fixed the issue. I sold my PC in a garage sale and bought a MAC. Life is much easier now.

  41. If you have a broken wifi router, not only it ruins the entire entertainment experience of with your family, but also takes on its aesthetic appearance. That’s why you need a wifi router repairman always ready.

  42. My sister built a new house and her internet would no connect my laptop for months….until today. I did only the 1st thing and restarted laptop and it was automatically connected when it came back up…thanks so much

  43. Still I see No internet connection , You have another options/solution for this , please make another blog in this subject. I try all things you talk in this blog but still not working.

    1. Hi, I’m not sure if you are still having this issue, and all of the solutions above didn’t work for me too. But I kept playing around with the settings and this is what ended up working for me:

      1. Right click start menu>Device Manager> Under Network adapters, right click on the adapter you’re using right now>properties

      2. Go to the “Advanced” tab

      3. Click Wireless Mode and set the value to “IEEE 802.11a” instead of Auto.

      4. Click “Ok” and check if your internet connected

This is what worked for me. Hope this helps!

  44. I’ve tried every fix there is. Nothing works. I can get internet access on an unsecured network, but as soon as I try my secure network, nothing. I go reset the DNS and my machine tells me I have internet access, but no webpages will open.

This is a brand new problem on this machine that has worked fine for 3 years. Jesus this is frustrating.
