Seagate Ships Savvio® 10k.2 To Worldwide Distribution Channel

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif.-February 12, 2007-Seagate Technology® (NYSE:STX) today announced it has begun shipping its Savvio 10K.2 hard drives in volume to the distribution channel worldwide. The Savvio family, based on the 2.5-inch enterprise small form factor platform and featuring a Serial Attached SCSI interface, provides a range of benefits to enterprise system designers.

Seagate’s second-generation 2.5-inch 10K-rpm enterprise class disc drive, the Savvio 10K.2 delivers high I/O transaction performance with industry-leading 1.6 million hour MTBF reliability and up to 146GB capacity. With power consumption that has dropped an average of 15% over the previous product generation, and a form factor that is 70% smaller than conventional 3.5-inch drives, the Savvio 10K.2 makes possible the integration of more drives into smaller chassis sizes.

“The trend in IT is clear – SAS provides a range of advantages that when coupled with Seagate’s 2.5-inch Savvio hard drive, produces powerful storage solutions that deliver new system-level benefits to the enterprise,” said Marc Jourlait, Seagate VP of global channel marketing. “Now system builders and VARs can address exciting new business opportunities as the combination of these technologies gains further momentum.”

Seagate’s Savvio 10K.2 hard drive joins the recently announced Savvio 15K hard drive as solutions for the creation of new types of storage systems including blade servers with true enterprise-class storage, 1U servers with full RAID 5 capability, and larger rack servers with the increased performance density. Savvio’s small size and reduced power consumption enable the creation of systems that can take advantage of today’s high-powered processors that require greater cooling and airflow.

The wide adoption and success of the Savvio product family has enabled the channel pricing of the Savvio 10K.2 hard drive to be targeted at a range of applications and budgets, and the Savvio 10K.2 not only increases capacity but also reduces costs. In fact, Savvio 10K.2 pricing is 150% less than the first generation Savvio when it was originally introduced*. Seagate is breaking down all barriers to make SFF (small form factor) enterprise drives attractive to system builders and integrators.

Distribution Channel Solutions
Seagate is actively working with channel-focused infrastructure providers to accelerate the adoption of the 2.5-inch enterprise hard drive standard along with Serial Attached SCSI (SAS). Savvio with the SAS interface is supported by a variety of leading makers who provide solutions for the distribution channel, including AIC, Akiwa, Chenbro, Enhance, Enlight, Intel, PDE Technology, LSI Logic, Rancho Technology, and SuperMicro.

“LSI and Seagate have a strong track record in working together to ease and accelerate the integration of the latest storage technologies into the channel market,” said Mark Miquelon, director of HBA products, Storage Components Group, LSI Logic. “As SAS begins to penetrate the enterprise and 2.5-inch drives enter the market, LSI is pleased to align our storage adapter products with Seagate’s new Savvio 10K.2 drives. We want to ensure that system builders and VARs have the infrastructure in place to leverage the performance and capacity of these solutions.”

“System Integrators and OEM customers rely on AIC and its Xtore business unit for unprecedented SA1-SD™ series SAS server and XJ-1100™ JBOD enclosures,” said Gene Lee, Corporate Vice President of AIC. “Because small form factor enterprise class drives have an improved performance density and lower power/IOPS, we’ve teamed up with Seagate to deliver cost-effective OEM/ODM small form-factor SAS enclosures to the white box market.”

Savvio hard drives provide a business opportunity for whitebox server solution builders looking to adopt Savvio drives as the transition from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch hard drives accelerates. Savvio hard drive’s compact size, record-setting reliability and performance make it a powerful value-added addition to any solution builder’s systems.

Seagate also provides a network of support to its partners through its award-winning Seagate Partner ProgramÔ (SPP). The SPP focuses on providing national, regional and local whitebox and whitebook system builders with the technical expertise and marketing resources needed to deliver Seagate storage to a broader range of customers.
