System Center Configuration Manager updated to version 1802

Microsoft just released the new version 1802 for System Center Configuration Manager, its popular systems management software product. The update includes several new features and product enhancements that could be of interest to current users and others.

More specifically, the new features are intended to build on the co-management and reporting capabilities that were included in version 1710. It also includes some real-time actions and streamlined infrastructure requirements. Here’s a rundown of some of the specific updates and new features available with this latest update.

The update includes the ability to transition Endpoint Protection workloads from Configuration Manager to Intune when the co-management option is enabled. There’s also a new co-management reporting dashboard that gives you information about co-management within your environment along with management insights that actually analyze the data in your site database.

Microsoft 365 adoption

When it comes to using Microsoft 365, there are also several updates, including a phased deployments feature, reports that collect device information for Windows AutoPilot, support for Windows 10 ARM64 devices, Surface Device Dashboard enhancements, new settings for Windows Device Application Guard, and a few others.

Streamlined infrastructure

To make the actual infrastructure of the platform more streamlined, version 1802 includes features that optimize delivery and add management options. Specifically, you can configure Delivery Optimization to leverage specific boundary groups when sharing content with others, add management points to boundary group fallback relationships to give you more control over what happens when clients fail to talk to their assigned management points, and the ability to move distribution points between sites.

Cloud Management Gateway improvements

When it comes to Cloud Management Gateway (CMG), the new updates include support for Azure Resource Center, the ability to browse and install user-available applications on Azure AD-joined devices, and the ability to deploy Windows 10 in-place upgrade task sequences over the internet.

Other updates

In addition to those new features, the update includes improvements in Software Center, OSD, run scripts, and support for hardware inventory. The System Center Configuration Manager update is currently being rolled out globally. If you don’t already have access to the new version, it should become available to you automatically very soon.
