A Federal Advisory Warns: Remote Management Tools Used in Callback Phishing Campaign

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), National Security Agency (NSA), and Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) have released a joint cybersecurity advisory statement regarding suspicious activity on Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) networks. The activity related to phishing attacks that used remote management and monitoring software. The remote brands deployed by the attackers were AnyDesk and ScreenConnect, and the scam involved product refunds.

MuddyWater, an Iranian-based cybercrime group, used legitimate company emails to install remote administration software, Syncro. Emails from legitimate-looking sources can trick people into believing them and clicking on links in them. Deep Instinct discovered this phishing operation in October and believes it’s been going on since September.

Europol took down iSpoof, a site that provided fraudsters technology to impersonate banks and government employees. In a joint operation, intelligence and law-enforcement authorities in the UK, Europe, Australia, America, Canada, and Ukraine arrested 142 suspects. The fraudsters took $120 million from their victims in international cybercrime activities.
