Apart from the annual Special 301 report (which identifies trade barriers to US companies and products due to the intellectual property laws, such as copyright, patents and trademarks, in other countries), the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) publishes a Notorious Market List. Apart from businesses that sell faked goods, the list publishes websites that sustain or engage in global piracy. The list includes popular sites such as Pirate Bay, Megaupload and Russian social network VKontakte.
The list also removes sites that appeared in previous versions but took the necessary actions to comply with IPR regulations. The list does not imply legal violations as we find in the annual Special 301 Report but the listed businesses are subject to further investigations for possible IPR infringements.
