Virtualization performance measured throught the years with VMmark

VMware VMmark enables equipment manufacturers, software vendors, system integrators and other organizations to:

  • Measure virtual machine performance accurately and reliably
  • Determine the performance of different hardware and virtualization platforms
  • Make appropriate hardware decisions for your virtual infrastructure

Recently, Bruce Herndon posted a nice article showing virtualization performance trends up-wards over the years as hardware and hypervisors have improved. Starting with ESX 3.0 on a Pentium 4 2 core + HT in 2005 to ESX 4.0 U1 on a Xeon 56xx 12 core + SMT in 2005. Below is a graphical representation of this trend:
