VMware just hosted its VMworld 2018 event, where the company unveiled and showcased a variety of new technologies and partnerships aimed at bringing new levels of flexibility and innovation to customers. Here are some of the key innovations that were discussed.
VMware Cloud on AWS
VMware already has a robust partner program, including programs with IBM Cloud and others. Now, the company is expanding its capabilities with a key partner — Amazon Web Services. The new options with AWS include availability in Sydney and other major geographic areas, AWS Elastic Block Storage integration, license optimizations, accelerated live migration, advanced NSX, and 50 percent lower entry-level pricing.
VMware Cloud Services
The company also announced at VMworld 2018 some updates to its cloud services strategy, including two new cloud services, and updates to its Wavefront offering. One of the new services is called VMware Cloud Automation Services. This gives organizations the ability to define, aggregate, and deploy services for applications across both public and private clouds. There’s also VMware Secure State, which gives organizations the ability to enforce configuration security and monitor compliance across all major clouds, including Azure and AWS. When it comes to Wavefront, the new capabilities are designed to give customers access to large-scale container monitoring and serverless application monitoring.
The VMware digital foundation is designed to give users the flexibility to move or redeploy applications to different datacenters, sites, or clouds. For example, if you’re working in a Kubernetes project or other open source initiatives, it gives you the ability to easily deploy and scale applications that can be run anywhere, while also offering consistent management and operations. To create this upgraded experience, the company is updating a number of products, including vSphere 6.7 Update 1, vSAN 6.7 Update 1, vSphere Platinum Edition, vRealize Automation 7.5, and vRealize Operations 7.0.
The company also unveiled a new digital workspace vision that’s intended to redefine how customers consume data and collaborate across apps. There are tons of updates in this area, including a Dell Factory Services partnership, predictive patching, Tech Preview of Workspace ONE Trust Network, and Run virtual desktops practically anywhere with VMware Horizon 7 and Horizon Cloud.
