Taking down the Kelihos botnet last September did not mean just being reactive to a cyber-incident but for Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit the process ends when the perpetrators behind the malware are caught. In fact, this unit continued with its investigations and concluded that Andrey N. Sabelnikov, a citizen of Russia, is responsible for the operations of the Kelihos botnet.
In a post published on TechNet Blogs by Richard Domingues Boscovich the Senior Attorney of Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit, Microsoft confirms that it has evidence that the Russian was behind the code, or participated in creating the Kelihos malware and that he used the malware to control, operate, maintain and grow the Kelihos botnet.
