New! Windows 10 Pro for Workstations supports advanced users

Microsoft recently announced the new Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, a high-end edition of Windows 10 Pro that offers unique support for server-grade PC hardware and is designed to meet the needs of compute-intensive workloads.

The new edition of Windows 10 Pro is designed specifically for advanced users deploying Workstation PCs in demanding and mission critical scenarios. Windows 10 Pro for Workstations will become available with the Windows 10 Fall Creators update, which will be delivered in mid-October.

Here’s more from Microsoft about the new edition and the features it offers for advanced users.

Resilient file system

The resilient file system (ReFS) gives users cloud-grade resiliency for their data on fault-tolerant storage spaces and makes it easier to manage large volumes of data. ReFS protects your data with integrity streams on mirrored storage spaces. Using those integrity streams, it can detect when data becomes corrupt and then use a healthy copy of your data on the other drive to correct and protect your information.

Persistent memory

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations uses nonvolatile memory modules (NVDIMM-N) hardware to give users the performance ability required to run demanding apps and data. NVDIMM-N enables users to read and write files with the fastest speed available using the computer’s main memory.

Faster file sharing

Another new feature, called SMB Direct, supports the use of network adapters that have Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) capability. Those network adapters are able to function at full speed with low latency using very little CPU.

Expanded hardware support

With Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, Microsoft is also expanding hardware support to solve some of the common pain points that users deal with when trying to take full advantage of the raw power of their machines. This expanded support will allow users to run Windows 10 Pro for Workstations on devices with high-performing configurations including server-grade Intel Xeon or AMD Opteron processors, with up to 4 CPUs, instead of today’s limit of 2 CPUs. They can also add massive memory up to 6TB, rather than being limited to the current 2TB.

  1. You mention improvements RAM (2TB is a “limit”, I lead a sheltered life), high speed storage, high speed networking, file system.

You don’t mention anything about video support.

In my position I see a constant stream of video issues specifically in Windows 10. Issues that tend to show up as soon as you go beyond single monitor HD (1920×1080) displays. With all of the other hardware upgrades I would expect those 3 monitors in your picture would be a minimum, and they would be 4K (heading to 8K and up as soon as they hit the market).

Heck my dinky little Win10 laptop has had, and still has (new ones), video issues since day one.

What is someone who spent tens of thousands dollars on all that hardware, going to say when their screen blanks out, or the image is fuzzy, or random blocks of the spreadsheet are “redacted”, or applications don’t scale appropriately or ….

    1. My Windows 10 Laptop on the other hand never had any problems with video whatsoever. I usually have 2 monitors connected maybe 3 at most if you also count the Laptop’s screen. So, the problem could be on the hardware, not on the software.
