Windows 2008 Backup will support Exchange 2007

TechEd is always a time for exciting announcements related to Microsoft technologies. Scott had promised one of these announcements for his session: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Tips & Tricks.

Well the mystery is finally over: the Windows Server Backup utility that ships with Windows 2008 will support Exchange 2007 backups.

Although streaming backups have been deprecated for Exchange Server 2007, it is still possible (and supported) to use this kind of data protection with the NTBackup utility from Windows Server 2003. Microsoft dropped Exchange streaming backup support with the release of Windows 2008, a decision that was highly contested by the IT Community in general.

So, the good news is that a new Microsoft plug-in for Windows Backup that will do Exchange VSS backups will be released this summer.
