Our first two articles today are on the topic of authentication. The first is from Monique Magalhaes, Rethinking how we authenticate: Continuous authentication for continuous security. Verifying a user’s identity can no longer be treated as a one-and-done procedure. Monique argues that authentication needs to evolve, and in today’s enterprise environment it has become critical to validate the user throughout the duration of each session.
Mitch Tulloch presents another side of the argument in his article, Give it the finger: Pushing back against biometric authentication. One rule that has passed the test of time is that as soon as something becomes a standard, the hackers will arrive to breach it. Unlike usernames and passwords, biometric data is forever. Mitch argues that building a system of rules is not going to deter hackers and adequate security is not yet in place.
Wrapping up the day, we discuss an article from Brien Posey, Inside the black box: Is technology becoming too complicated? The days are gone when there is a known solution for each technology defect. Today we deal with algorithms that we don’t understand and middleware that is contained within its own black box. We exist in a unique time in history during which we accept and embrace technology without really knowing how it works.
