How To Enable Publishing Of APIPA Records In DNS Server

By default, DNS Servers do not publish or create DNS Resource Records (A) for APIPA Addresses. APIPA Addresses start with 169.x.x.x. These IP Addresses get assigned to the Network Card which are set to obtain IP Addresses from DHCP Server and when DHCP Server is unable to assign any IP Addresses. DNS Server do not creates the A Resource Record in the DNS database for these addresses. You might need to enable this for some reasons in your production environment.

To enable DNS Server to register A Records for APIPA, you need to change the following registry entry value to 1:

  • KEY Name: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters
  • Entry Name: PublishAutonet
  • Type: REG_DWORD
  • Value: 0 (by default), (0=disabled, 1=enabled)

Setting value of PublishAutonet to 1 instructs DNS Server to build Resource Records for APIPA.
