A few weeks ago, cloud provider Nirvanix shut its doors while providing customers with relatively little warning. Last week, another cloud provider went dark. This time, it was MegaCloud and this time, the shutdown appears to have taken place very quietly. The companys site is longer accessible and has not been accessible since at least late October.
MegaCloud was a provider of free and paid consumer cloud storage. Frankly, this is a very, very crowded space and, given the cost, its not surprising to see one shut down and I fully expect that well see more.
As is the case whenever something like this happens, its an important reminder that the cloud is not a silver bullet and that consumers and enterprises needs to always take steps to make sure that their data remains protected, no matter where it resides.
