Although security vulnerabilities in the operating system tend to get the most press, the biggest threat now comes from insecure applications. And while each new version of Windows adds security measures and tightens up security, the overall state of application security might appear to be getting worse, not better. Veracode’s semi-annual State of Software Security report shows that 84 percent of applications are not secure enough to pass its test; the results just six months ago were much better, with “only” 58 percent failing. Now, if you delve a little deeper, you find that the change is mostly due to new, stricter grading standards – but those higher standards are a good thing, and the results are still troubling.
