A Quick Tip To Check If DCs Can Register Records With DNS Dynamically

Domain Controllers registers or refreshes it's DNS Records in the DNS Server every 1 hour. It does this by using the DDNS (Dynamic DNS). The Dynamic DNS must be enabled on the domain controller so that they can register the DNS records dynamically.

You can know if Domain Controllers are using Dynamic DNS to register/refresh their records in the DNS Server by querying the following registry location:

  • KEY Name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters
  • Entry Name: UseDynamicDns
  • Type: REG_DWORD
  • Value: 0(disabled) 1(enabled)

Always check the above registry entry if domain controllers are not performing the dynamic registration.
