Block access to Windows NT NetBIOS

Windows NT’s Server service provides much of the NetBIOS
functionality. Stop the Server service and NT will not
respond to TCP ports 135, 137, and 138, as well as UDP port 139. These ports are
the basis for many of NTs informational exposure. Does this mean the NT server
will no longer function or that the NT workstation? No. NetBIOS functionality is
disabled. The hidden admin shares like C$ are not there. NetBIOS over TCP/IP is
gone. If the server is an IIS web server, a Netscape web server, a Notes server
– all that should still work. What does not work is the NetBIOS gui tools
Explorer and User Manager. Need them – start the Server service; do what you
need; stop the Server service.
