Database Portability between versions?

Database portability is a very nice feature introduced with Exchange 2007 which allows a database to be moved to another Exchange 2007 mailbox server in your Exchange organization. But when you have different Exchange 2007 mailbox server versions or operating system differences you need to keep in mind that:

  1. You cannot move a database from an Exchange 2007 Mailbox Server Sp1 to an Exchange 2007 Mailbox Server RTM.
  2. You can move a database from an Exchange 2007 Mailbox Server RTM to an Exchange 2007 Mailbox Server Sp1.
  3. You cannot move a database from an Exchange 2007 Mailbox Server Sp1 installed on a Windows 2008 to an Exchange 2007 Mailbox Server Sp1 installed on a Windows 2003.
  4. You can move a database from an Exchange 2007 Mailbox Server Sp1 installed on a Windows 2003 to an Exchange 2007 Mailbox Server Sp1 installed on a Windows 2008, but keep in mind that you may be faced with performance issues since the secondary indexes will be recreated on the fly.
