Enabling 802.1X/PEAP for Wired Networks (in Vista)

In Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, the Wireless Zero Configuration service controlled 802.1X for wired connections, which is enabled by default. However, in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, 802.1X is managed by the new Wired AutoConfig service, which is disabled by default.

To make the Authentication tab visible on the Properties dialog for wired network connections, you must start the service:

  1. Click the Start button, type mmc into the search box, and hit Enter.
  2. Click File > Add/Remove Snap-in.
  3. Double-click Services, click Finish on the dialog, and click OK
  4. Select Services under the Console Root, on the left.
  5. Double-click on the Wired AutoConfig service.
  6. Click the Start button, and to make it start at boot each time, choose Automatic for the Start Type option.
