Get ready for a big one: Patch Tuesday, that is

IT administrators are groaning already. The more patches to apply, the more chance that something will go wrong. The smart thing to do is test all of the updates before rolling them out, but more patches means more time doing that. February may be a short month but it’s a big one when it comes to Patch Tuesday (today, February 9). It will include thirteen security bulletins (a nasty omen for the superstitious among us), five of them rated as critical. A whopping twenty-six total vulnerabilities are addressed.

The good news is that if you’ve already upgraded to the newest software, some of these won’t affect your systems. Only three of the critical updates apply to Windows 7, Server 2008 and Vista, whereas all five affect Windows 2000 and XP.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Let’s hope you’re not all still stuck at the office, testing patches, when it rolls around.
