I’ve been working a lot with Hyper-V 2012 and Windows Server 2012 while I’ve been on the road. I wanted to provide you with some details about how to manage your Hyper-V 2012 instances using Windows Server 2012.
I’m starting with the assumption that you’ve already installed Hyper-V Server 2012 and have joined it to your domain. If you haven’t, refer to this blog post for details (Manage network and domain settings in Hyper-V Server 2012).
Add the Hyper-V server to Server Manager
Now, on your Windows Server 2012 machine, start Server Manager. Go to the Manage menu and choose the Add Servers option.
In the Add Servers window, type part of the name of your Hyper-V host and then click the Find Now button. Once your host (or hosts) are found, select the ones you’d like to add to management and then click the right arrow to place them in the Selected window. When you’re done, click OK. You can see the steps outlined in the figure below.
Provide credentials for remote server
Even though you’ve added the servers to Server Manager, they may not be manageable quiet yet. When you add a server, you may get a message that reads “Online-Access Denied”. In this case, you need to provide credentials when you add a Hyper-V server to be managed.
To do so, right-click the afflicted server in Server Manager and, from the shortcut menu, choose Manage As.
When the Windows Security window opens, provide the credentials for a domain account with rights to manage the Hyper-V server.
Add Hyper-V Management Tools
Now that the servers themselves can be managed, you need to make sure that the Windows Server 2012 server itself has the Hyper-V Management Tools installed so that you can manage Hyper-V. To do so:
· From Server Manager, go to Local Server
· Go to Manage > Add Roles and Features
When the Add Roles and Features Wizard window opens, click Next until you get to the Features page. On that page, scroll down until you find Remote Server Administration Tools > Role Administration Tools. From there, select Hyper-V Management Tools and then click the Install button.
As the tools install, you’re kept apprised of progress.
That’s it! You can now manage the Hyper-V servers.
