Improving VMware View Video Performance

In virtual desktop scenarios, it is important to keep end user perceived performance at a peak level.  If a user perceives performance is bad, then complaints will come in.  One of the things that can cause an end user to perceive poor performance is poor video quality.  This can happen even if other metrics like CPU, RAM, and Disk are performing optimally. Eric Scholten has written an article that takes a deep dive into fine-tuning VMware View video performance.  Topics covered include:

  • Fast Send Datagram Thresholds
  • PC-over-IP image quality levels
  • Multimedia redirection

Keep in mind though that you want to be careful with some of these tuning parameters as bandwidth can be impacted.  If you are on a high-speed LAN, then tune away, otherwise keep in mind quality vs. performance.
