Setting up internet access on ISA Server itself

Question #950

All of my clients and other servers that use the ISA server as their gateway are able to access the internet based on the Access Policies I have set up. However, the ISA server ITSELF is not able to access the internet at all. Whether that be WWW, FTP, SMTP, POP, PING, etc. How can I remedy this?

Answer

1. Do not install the Firewall Client on the ISA Server — This is NOT supported by MS
2. You do not need to make the ISA Server itself a Web Proxy Client
In order to for applications on the ISA Server itself to work correctly, you must configure packet filters.
For example, if you want to allow outbound web server access, create a packet filter that allows outbound requests to TCP 80. It’s that easy.
