Marathon – Buffy Episode 1- How to relate to others

I’m always having trouble come up with new blogging matereal. Tonight I started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer again. There have literally been college courses built on this TV series. So I think it’s fair that I can write a micro blog based on it. So here we are, episode 1. Buffy move to Sunny Dale.

What can we learn from this as people and as IT professionals?

1. Don’t trust the first people you come across in a new job. They may be like Cordelia and trying to use you becuase you don’t know any better.

2. Network! I’m not talking about the OSI layer her. I’m talking about communicating with folks. I had dinner this week with a lady who worked for EMC. I learned a lot. I had lunch with a channel partner who had some complaints about our product. I’m going to take that back to the team and see what we can do!

3. Break the rules…sometimes. Don’t be that jerk that doesn’t care about anyone else. Break the rules if you need to, but don’t be a jerk about it. Don’t assume that you’re smarter than every one else. It’s likely you’re not. But you probably have distinctive talents. Use those to your advantage. But be nice to people with other talents.
