At the moment a court trial is taking place in Germany that will establish if Microsoft’s Windows 7, Internet Explorer 9, Windows Media Player and Xbox 360 are actually infringing two patents – about video compression and decompression technology, which helps in reducing the amount of bandwidth used during video streaming. The case was filed by General Instrument Corporation, a subsidiary of Motorola. Microsoft has many patent agreements with third-parties in place and earns lots of money from royalties, so maybe it’s high time to share some of it – big guys play together, won’t they?
