Perfecting the Art of Service Delivery with Hybrid Microsoft Exchange

The GSX Blog

cloud hybrid1.1 resized 600By now, the benefits of leveraging the public cloud to run critical business applications are widely known. Lower and predictable subscription-based costs, increased performance due to virtualization and automation technologies, and the outsourcing of tedious management and maintenance tasks to a third-party are among the reasons that many businesses are already making the move. And, IT administrators are increasingly under pressure from management and various lines of business they serve to lower TCO by outsourcing at least some workloads, including Microsoft Exchange, to third-party hosted infrastructure.

However, there are many concerns that IT administrators have about moving sensitive corporate data to a cloud service provider. Highly regulated industries, for instance, often choose to keep many applications workloads on-premises for compliance and security reasons. Even so, the benefits of running at least some workloads in the cloud are clear, and organizations are increasingly adopting a hybrid approach, combining external cloud services and infrastructure with on-premises ones. To do this effectively, IT administrators need performance monitoring and automation tools to determine when it makes sense to run applications in the cloud or on-premises, and to ensure that an increasingly mobile workforce always has access to critical business productivity applications like Microsoft Exchange.

To date, one of the main roadblocks to cloud adoption has been performance issues and service interruptions. Proactive and automated performance monitoring tools, however, allow IT administrators determine the root cause of performance problems in real-time, and pinpoint whether the problem is coming from Exchange Online or on-premises Exchange servers. IT administrators can also use performance monitoring tools to follow the consumption of resources, and proactively match supply with demand to avoid oversized or undersized infrastructures, thereby reducing costs. Performance monitoring tools also enable IT administrators to anticipate potential performance issues before they occur and provide accurate performance metrics and related reports to prove to each line of business that service levels are indeed being met.

While some businesses, particularly smaller ones, are already moving their entire Exchange environment to Microsoft Office 365, most of the larger ones are architecting hybrid environments, which can be difficult – if not impossible – to manage without proactive performance monitoring and reporting tools like GSX Monitor & Analyzer. With it, IT administrators can anticipate and prevent email downtime, and provide business continuity by avoiding any service disruptions when servers go down, whether in the cloud or on-premises. GSX Monitor & Analyzer also gives IT administrators better control over service delivery at all of the points where problems can occur in a complex hybrid environment, including the: proxy, protocol, mailbox database, transport, and end-user levels. Overall, IT administrators can lower TCO for all lines of business within the organization while providing uninterrupted service to critical messaging and collaboration platforms, like Exchange, with GSX line of products.
