Terminal Services Advertising in Windows Server 2008

In Windows Server 2008, only servers that have Terminal Server role service installed will advertise themselves as Terminal Servers, and will be viewable in the Terminal Services Manager snap-in.

A client computer running, Remote Desktop Client obtains the list of only the Terminal Servers. It uses an API Call (NetServerEnum) with a parameter for server type (SV_TYPE_TERMINALSERVER). The Terminal Server computer responds as per the value set in the registry entry. The value is stored in the TSAdvertise registry entry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server key.

You can change the value of TSAdvertise entry to enable/disable the advertising of Terminal Server computer.

  • 0 = Disable Advertising
  • 1 = Enable Advertising
