Troubleshooting Group Policy

Here's a three-step approach to troubleshooting Group Policy issues in Windows Vista and later:

  1. Open Event Viewer and look under Custom Views\Administrative Events. Check first for any Group-Policy related events listed there and examine their details.
  2. Still in Event Viewer, look under Applications and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\Group Policy\Operational. Filter for each displayed event ID and look for patterns and their causes.
  3. Still examining the Group Policy Operational log, review policy processing step by step to identify any failure points and their error codes. Then use this information to resolve the problem blocking policy processing from working as expected.
