If you want to upgrade a virtual machine running on VMware Infrastructure 3 to run on vSphere, there are a few networking considerations for the guest VM (ironically, VI3 virtual machines carry the designation version 4. vSphere virtual machines are at version 7). Rick Vanover posted a nice article detailing the necessary steps. Steps include:
- Install VMware Tools first – even if the VM is in VI3
- Document IP addresses (because a new network adapter will get installed when you run the upgrade)
- Remove non-present devices (Rick showed a few cool command lines to do this):
-
- Run cmd.exe
- type: set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
- type: devmgmt.msc
- select “Show Hidden Devices” from the View menu.
- Look in the network adapters section and remove old devices
- Ensure MAC addresses are going to be an issue
