After you defined a Dial-up Connection, I strongly suggest to verify the settings
(and for some Internet connections, you MUST define additional parameters ! ) :
Goto “Network and Dial-up Connections“ and Right-Click on your connection to select “Properties“
Tab: General Here you could enter/correct the access phone number to your ISP. Make sure, that the check-mark is set for “Showing the icon in the Taskbar when connected”.
tab: Options Here you can customize the “Dialing Options”. I suggest to “Prompt for Name and Password”, it will display the values defined during the definition allowing to verify and modify them. As part of the Redialing options, you can define, after how much “Idle Time“ the connection should be terminated by “Hanging Up”
tab: Security Settings for the trasmittion of the password. Some ISP’s (like: CompuServe and UUNET) require the use of the Script to control the logon process. if you need a Script, put the Check-mark and then click on “Browse” to locate the script-file.
The Dialog-box to locate the Script-files does NOT point to the location of the Script-files provided with Windows 2000.
Change to “RAS” in your Windows System directory (usually: \Winnt\SYSTEM32\RAS) and select your Script, if it is provided with Windows 2000. (if you have a script provided by your ISP, like the INNET.SCP of UUNET, you should first copy it to this directory, where it is then stored with all other scripts).
tab: Networking The network components, which are used for this connection. For a SECURE connection to the Internet (to prevent others to connect to your disk), you should UN-CHECK “File and Printer Sharing” ! When connecting to the Internet, TCP/IP is the required protocol. (when connecting to other systems, you may have to use “Install” to add an additional Protocol). Since most Computers, especially ISP’s, use DHCP to assign automatically the IP-address, there is no need to configure anything for the TCP/IP protocol.
However, if required, you can define the IP-address and also the DNS-server: – select the PCT/IP-protocol – click on the button “Properties” |
We are ready to make the connection to the Internet.
