What is Group Policy Caching in Windows Server 2012 R2

When a client computer running Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2 gets the Group Policy settings from a domain controller, the policy contents are stored in the local datastore. At next reboot, the client computer reads the most recently downloaded version of policy settings from the local datastore. This reduces the time it takes to process the policy settings.

Group Policy Caching is enabled by default on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. This feature can speed up the logon process. The Client Side Extension will load the group policy settings from local database instead of downloading it from a domain controller.

GP Caching setting can be controlled by navigating to the below location in a Group Policy Object:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Tampltes > System > Group Policy > “Configure Group Policy Caching” policy setting.
