Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit Utilities


The Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit includes many useful utilities. A fair
number of these utilities will be familiar to Windows NT Server Resource Kit
users but many are new in W2K. Even the “older” utilities have added
functionality. There are also much related to Active Directory. Microsoft makes
many Windows 2000 tools free for download :


  • Active Directory Sizer ,
    Adsizer.exe
    : Estimates the hardware required for deploying Active
    Directory in an organization.
  • API Monitor , Apimon.exe :
    Monitors the API calls made by a process.
  • Application Security , Appsec.exe
    : Hotfix – Sets user permissions on a file-by-file basis to lock down
    accessible applications.
  • Cluster Quorum Restore Utility ,
    Clusrest.exe
    : Restores the quorum disk of a cluster, which is not done
    by a restore process using NtBackup.
  • Counter List , Ctrlist.exe
    : Lists all objects and counters installed in the system for the given
    language ID.
  • Cluster Verification Utility ,
    clustsim.exe
    : verifies that a two-node cluster is set up properly.
  • Delete File and Reparse Points ,
    DELRP.exe
    : Deletes a file or directory and any associated NTFS reparse
    points.

    : Unregisters a service with the service control manager.

    Displays information about heap usage in a user-mode process or pool usage in
    kernel-mode memory.

    Extracts performance counters from logs created by the Performance Logs and

    : Configures Microsoft Remote Procedure Call (RPC) to listen
    on specified ports.
  • RPC Dump , Rpcdump.exe :
    Dumps all endpoints in the endpointmapper database, pings each endpoint, gathers
    other stats, sorts and displays the data.
  • RPC Connectivity Verification Tool , RPC Ping : Verifies that Windows 2000 Server services are
    responding to remote procedure call requests from network clients.

    environmental variables in the the user or computer environment.
  • Performance Data Block Dump Utility , Showperf.exe : Dumps the contents of the Performance Data
    block so you can view and debug the raw data structure.

  • User State Migration Tool : Helps migrate a user’s
    documents and settings (state) before an operating system migration to Windows
    2000.
  • Virtual Address Dump , Vadump.exe
    : Shows the state and size of each segment of virtual address space.
  • Browser Client Context Tool ,

    : ISAPI application DLL that displays the browser client
    context. Lists security identifiers, privileges, env variables.

    Returns the domain or computer name and the user name of the user currently
    logged onto the computer on which the tool runs.
