TweakUI for Win95/98/ME/NT/2000


TweakUI allows you to “tweak the UI, the User-Interface“, to fine-tune the display and some
operation, including some networking options (and therefor I include it n my website).
TweakUI has a long history:
First part of the Windows95 PoyerToys available as download from the Microsoft website as
unsupported” utility, it was included on the Windows98 first edition CD-ROM, but not anymore
on the Windows98 Second Edition CD-ROM or on Windows ME.
Also the download locations on the Microsoft website has changed several times, so the
information below ( valid on Oct 21, 2000 ) may change in future, but today it is:

Microsoft Platforms Support does not support the installation or use of the TweakUI tool. The tool has not been updated for for use in Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows Me. Many options in TweakUI may function the same in Windows 98 Second Edition as they do in Microsoft Windows 98. NOTE: Do not use the Windows 98 version of TweakUI in Windows Me.
TweakUI, an unsupported tool for expert users, is not included on the Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows Me CD-ROMs. A version of the program is included on the original Windows 98 CD-ROM. To locate the program, navigate to the following folder on the Windows 98 CD-ROM:

<CD-ROM Drive>:\tools\reskit\powertoy

Read Me First
With the Tweak UI 1.33 update, you can adjust your Windows User Interface, including menu speed, window animation, and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

The Microsoft® Windows® Shell Development Team has put together a set of productivity tools called PowerToys. If you’re a Windows power-user, go ahead and try them out, but realize these are unsupported tools. Microsoft Technical Support is unable to answer questions about PowerToys.

System Requirements
Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 98 or Windows 95.

How to Download

  1. Create a folder by right-clicking on the desktop, click New, and then click Folder. Type a name for the folder.
  2. Click the Download Now button at the top or bottom of this page. In the File download dialog box that appears on your screen, click Save Program to Disk.
  3. In the Save As dialog box, choose to save the file in the folder you just created, then click Save.
  4. Open the folder and double-click the downloaded file. This may create several new files in your folder. Among these, look for “Read Me” or “INF” files.
  5. The “Read Me” file will contain any additional download information you need to know. To install the file, right click the .INF file and click Install.

How to Get Started
You don’t need to do anything after downloading.


So, lets follow these instructions:

By default, it will create the files in
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP,you may
want to define a new location
(as in my example)
Then, right-click on TweakUI.INF
and select “Install”.
The installation starts,
you need to close the
“TweakUI” Help-window
for the installation to finish.
TweakUI is then ready for use
in the Control-Panel.
